Changing an existing password

When should I change my password?

A password is valid for 1 year; after that time, your account will be unusable. You will be notified several times of your password’s upcoming expiration via email, starting 30 days in advance. You should therefore make sure to change your password before the expiration date; otherwise a new password must be generated for you at the Service Desk.

Additionally, it may be necessary for you to change your password when you have come into contact with malware or phishing. In that case, you may be asked to change your password.

How can I change my password?

You can only do so via the LISA Selfservice Portal or via the My University employee page that contains the link Accounts and email addresses. After logging in, select the “Change password” option.

What requirements should my password meet?

A password must have a length of at least 10 and at most 64 characters. It cannot be the same as one of your three previous passwords, nor can it contain three or more successive characters that are also part of your username in that same order.

Furthermore, the password must:


Contain at least 1 lowercase letter from the a-z range.


Contain at least 1 uppercase letter from the A-Z range.


Contain at least 1 digit from the 0-9 range.

You can use punctuation marks as part of your password, but you can only use those symbols that can be entered directly or by using the SHIFT key on a standard QWERTY keyboard. Be careful when using different keyboards on which certain punctuation marks in combination with letters generate diacritical marks such as an umlaut, a diaeresis or an accent grave. Those symbols cannot be part of your password.

I can no longer change my password when logging into my UT workplace.

In the past, you could change your password at a UT workplace using the “Change password” feature of Microsoft Windows. This feature is no longer available. Now, you can only change your password using the LISA Self service Portal or via the My University employee page and employee portal, which contain the link Accounts and email addresses.

The reason for this lies in the fact that the passwords for eduroam and web applications are also changed using TAP.

I am a new employee

How do I sign in for the first time?

When you have your initial account information (listed in the account letter you received from the HR department), you can change your password from any computer with an internet connection through the LISA Self service Portal. You will also be referred to this page from the My University employee page.

Log in using your initial account information and select the “Change password” option.

How long can I use the password stated in the account letter?

Your initial password is valid for a period of two months. You must change your password during this period or else your account will become unusable. If that happens, you can only request a new initial password from the Service Desk ICT by visiting the desk and presenting your ID card. During this two-month period, you will not be notified of your account’s upcoming expiration.

The new password will be valid for a period of one year.

I have forgotten my password. What should I do?

When you cannot remember your password, you can change it yourself on This option is only available if you have registered a personal email address before you forgot your password, because an email will be sent to your personal email address. You can check whether you have entered a personal email address or change the address by clicking the following link:

Finally, you can request a new initial password by visiting the Service Desk ICT and presenting your ID card.

I will be absent from the UT for a while, e.g. because I am travelling abroad. Is there anything specific I should keep in mind?

Your password is valid for a period of one year, after which your account will become unusable if nothing is done. Starting 30 days before your password’s expiration, you will be notified of said expiration several times by email. If you will be absent for more than one year, it would be wise to check your email inbox regularly.

If you know in advance that you will not be logging in for an extended period of time, you can change your password just before you leave. This allows you to take full advantage of your new password’s period of validity.

If your account expires in spite of all these measures, you can request a new initial password by visiting the IT Service Desk and presenting your ID card.

I can no longer log into my computer. Can I still change my password through the IDM Portal?

It is possible that your account has expired because your password was not changed within one year. If you cannot change your password through the LISA Self service, refer to the answer to the question: I have forgotten my password.

I can log into my computer, but I cannot access the web applications. What should I do?

Your password has not been synchronised with all standard UT systems. By changing your password via the LISA Self service, this new password will be synchronised with all underlying standard systems.
