Lezing door David Tall

David Tall heeft een lezing getiteld “There is nothing as practical as a good theory: From theory to practice in the Calculus” verzorgd tijdens de ORD dagen.

As a PhD student, I was criticized gently by my mentor and friend Richard Skemp for insisting that all theory in education should link to practical situations. He counselled me that a good theory had practical implications beyond the immediate attempt to solve a particular problem. In this presentation I will look at the practical teaching and learning of the calculus within a wider framework of human learning and the development of mathematical concepts. This takes us beyond the day-to-day search to teach the next lesson and on to a surprisingly more practical way of making sense of how we learn to teach and think mathematically. I found out that a good theory need not be complicated, indeed, it should be essentially simple.
