Maya is the program coordinator of the Smart Cities Initiative. The Smart Cities Initiative ensures to create overview of ongoing activities, provide for interdepartmental collaboration and develop new research activities. As the program coordinator, Maya plays the role of connector, knowledge broker and project developer.
Her research interests are local policy on sustainable development, energy and climate. Her PhD research examined how local governments are preparing for the impacts of climate change. The research was based on three research projects that were financed by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Groot Salland water authority and the Norwegian Research Council (Forskningsrådet).
Before joining academia, she served as a policy officer in national and local government and was a project manager at the Europe Direct Centre in Twente. She holds a Master of Arts in Contemporary History (2004) and PhD in Public Administration (2013).
