'What if': stories about the future
This research is aimed at the role of 'what if…' methods associated with stimulating people's imagination with respect to how their lives can be improved. The development of narrative investigative methodologies is key and directed toward the creation and realization of options for the promotion of mental health. One specific form of 'what if' looks to the future as the ultimate domain of (unknown) possibilities. Part of the investigation thus focuses on the role of future stories, which are collected online in the form of letters from the future. In narrative research much emphasis is placed on recollection and looking back, but until now stories about the future have remained something of a grey area. What is the psychological function of 'what if' stories? How can these stories (including with the assistance of technology) be created? What does this demand of storytellers and their environment? What is needed in order to realize this?
