The language that we use reflects and perpetuates something of the ethos of our society, and research shows that our language empowers men and disempowers women, often without conscious awareness, and often unnecessarily.
This lecture aims to define different forms of sexist language, explain why gender-neutral language is important, raise your awareness of spoken and written sexist language, and give you clear guidelines of how to achieve gender-neutral language.
Julie Bytheway is an English editor and teacher. She has studied education and English (including linguistics, literature, and media) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Massey University, New Zealand. Originally she taught English to first language speakers, but on moving to the Netherlands, she retrained to teach English as a second language. She is passionate about gender equality and her research interests include power in discourse, cooperative learning, and academic vocabulary acquisition. She currently works for the University of Twente as an English editor and Kenloo academy for professional studies in Apeldoorn as an English course developer and teacher.
