EurAAP sponsors cooperation with Barcelona

Ben Witvliet received a € 2500 grant from the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) for Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) experiments in The Netherlands and Spain. The experiments in Spain will be done in cooperation with the GR-SETAD group of LaSalle University Ramon Llull in Barcelona. Cooperation with LaSalle started December last year. Previous research of GR-SETAD includes long distance ionospheric radio links from Spain to Antarctica.

The experiments that are planned involve eight beacon transmitters with switch left-hand and right-hand circular polarization, distributed over the country. The research focuses on antenna-propagation interaction and is aimed reduction of ionospheric signal fading and increase of throughput, extending previous research of Ben Witvliet.

Ben is a part-time Ph.D. student at the Telecommunication Engineering group. He also works at the Radiocommunications Agency in Groningen, the Netherlands. An overview of his previous NVIS research can also be seen on his poster Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) Antenna and Propagation Research in The Netherlands, for which he won the Best Poster Award at the URSI Benelux Forum in November 2014.
