Saturation throughput of 802.15.4 MAC protocol for sensor networks

In this presentation we present a simple yet accurate model for analyzing the saturation throughput of the 802.15.4 MAC protocol for sensor networks. The throughput of a network reflects at what speed it is able to process measurements, and is an important quality of service aspect. In our analysis we introduce the concept of a `natural layer', which reflects the time that a sensor node typically has to wait prior to sending a packet. The model is simple and provides new insight how the throughput depends on the protocol parameters and the number of nodes in the network. Validation experiments with simulations demonstrate that the model is highly accurate for a wide range of parameter settings of the MAC protocol, and applicable to both large and small networks.
About Martijn Onderwater
Martijn Onderwater received a M.Sc. degree in Mathematics (2003) from the University of Leiden, and a M.Sc. degree in Business Mathematics & Informatics (2010, Cum Laude) from VU University Amsterdam. From 2003 to 2008 he was a software engineer in industry. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student at the Center for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) in Amsterdam. His research focuses on wireless sensor networks and his interests include sensor networks, Markov Decision Problems, dimensionality reduction, and evolutionary algorithms.
