Public transport: getting to the university.
To go the University by public transport, first take a train to Hengelo station, and then take bus 9 (destination Enschede station).
TrainThere is a train service from Schiphol to Hengelo once every 30 minutes. Once per hour this is a direct train, with final destination either Enschede or Berlin (you can take this international train with a normal ticket). Otherwise its final destination is Groningen/Leeuwarden, and you have to switch at Amersfoort. The first train departs at 06:19 from Schiphol, the last train at 23:19. The train takes approximately 2h15m.
It is important that you buy a ticket before you board the train, or you will be fined 35 euro on top of the ticket price. You can buy a ticket at the ticket machines, which accept coins (but no banknotes) or Maestro credit cards, or at the service points on the bigger railway stations. Note that in Holland you can either travel first class (more expensive and more luxurious) or second class.
BusBus 9 goes every 15 minutes (every 30 minutes in the evening). You can buy a ticket in the bus by telling the bus driver where you want to go, in this case 'Twente University' (travelling back, ask for 'Hengelo railway station'). Get out at the 'UT / Viaduct' bus stop (see map below). From there, it is a walk of about 5 minutes to the Vrijhof.
The bus takes about 15 minutes. The last bus from Hengelo station departs at 23:33 pm.
