From Cellular Mechanisms to Neural Circuit Behaviour
Within this theme we investigate how neurons in the brain communicate and how we can interface electronics to the neural system using neurotechnology and cellular engineering principles. Networks of living dissociated neurons as well as brain slices are used for this purpose. In addition, computational models of single neurons and complex neuronal networks serve as a means to investigate brain functioning. This theme advances our understanding of brain functioning under normal as well as pathological conditions, which aid in the development of (smart) neurointerfaces for clinical application such as neurostimulation methods and brain-computer interfacing.
