BrainGain is a Dutch research consortium consisting of researchers, industry and potential users of Brain-Computer and Computer-Brain interfaces. The program started in September 2007 and is funded by SmartMix, a Dutch initiative to support applied research.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Stroke rehabilitation in the home environment

Stroke is the leading cause of disability among adults, and upper extremity hemi paresis is the most common functional impairment. Rehabilitation aims to promote adaptive plasticity, which is relevant to assist in the rebuilding of voluntary motor function.


In this project, first we explore if motor imagery and the use of visual input is relevant to improve and/or to assist in motor rehabilitation in (acute) stroke patients. As has been shown by various researchers, including our group, various EEG rhythms are modulated both by performing motor acts and by the observation and imaging of particular movements. We will investigate if the amount of this modulation, and the corresponding spatiotemporal dynamics, can serve as a predictor of stroke recovery. If the putative mirror-neuron system is involved in these modulations is at present unclear, but this study may provide relevant clinical information on this issue, too.


In addition, we wish to evaluate if motor imagery and the use of visual input may be clinically relevant in stroke recovery rehabilitation programs. This includes the realization of an in-home “BCI—neurofeedback-system” for real-time processing of EEG to assist in the realization of “virtual movements” in those patients with initial very limited motor function. The neurofeedback user interface of that system will be based on ‘’serious gaming’’ information technology and will hopefully make use of dry electrodes.
