Assistant professor

Oresti Baños is a Telecommunications and Electrical Engineer. He pursued his PhD in Computer Science at University of Granada on expert systems for wearable activity recognition. He worked as a Project Manager and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Kyung Hee University in South Korea. He investigates in the area of "Holistic, Adaptive and Evolutionary Modeling of Human Behavior" and "Personalized Coaching Systems" and he also teaches in the CreaTe programme on Smart Technologies.

Bert-Jan van Beijnum is an associate professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS / EWI) of the University of Twente (UT). He is a member of the Remote Monitoring & Treatment (RMT) group. His research is embedded in projects of the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) and the Institute for Biomedical Technology (BMTI) of the University of Twente.

Jan Buitenweg (associate professor) is initially trained as an electrical engineer. From the start of his education he specialized his expertise towards biomedical research and especially on neurophysiology. Since his PhD on neuroelectronic interfacing, he develops methods for observation and modulation of chronic pain mechanisms.

Joost le Feber received the MSc in electrical engineering at Delft University and a PhD from the Medical Faculty at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His current research focuses on connectivity, plasticity, and excitability in (cultured) neuronal networks, aiming to bridge the gap between cellular neurophysiology and cognitive processes.

Ainara is specialized in biomedical signal processing, focused on cardio-respiratory disorders. Her current research interests include the characterization of the cardio-respiratory pattern in patients with cardiac or respiratory failure, and the implementation of viable mobile health solutions to enhance patient-centered care using innovation in technology and treatments.

Ciska Heida

Ciska Heida has a background in Electrical Engineering. Her primary research interests focus on the application of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. She combines computational modeling and experimental research to unravel the mechanisms underlying DBS therapy and to simulate and test new therapeutic strategies.

Hermie Hermens

Hermie is a biomedical engineer with a strong background in sensing of motor function, especially surface EMG. His main research interest is in combining biomedical engineering with ICT to realise remote monitoring and to enable remotely supervised training.

Miriam Vollenbroek

Miriam is a human movement scientist with a strong research background in innovation of care using technology for people with chronic diseases experiencing problems with motor performance. Her main research interest is how to develop telemedicine applications that enable patients to train in their own daily environment in an effective manner as well as evaluation of these applications.

Richard van Wezel

Richard is a neuroscientist with a background in neurophysiology, sensory processing and cognition. He performed his PhD at Utrecht University and received a VIDI-grant. Current interests are in neural plasticity and cortical neural network recording and imaging.

Harm op den Akker

Harm is a Computer Scientists with a Master Degree in Human Media Interaction. Currently he is working at Roessingh Research and Development. His research interests lie in Machine Learning, Data Mining and Human-Machine Interaction. He is currently working on data processing and feedback generation in tele-monitoring and tele-treatment systems.

Abdel has a background in experimental neuroscience, specifically visual information processing in the cortex, and is now doing research in practical applications of neuroscience research to assist patients with disabilities. He is involved in the Smart Glasses for Parkinson’s project as well as the more recent work on developing facial emotion recognition technology for the visually impaired.

Lex van Velsen

Lex van Velsen

Lex van Velsen is a Senior Researcher at Roessingh Research and Development (Telemedicine cluster) and a researcher at the Biomedical Signals and Systems groups at the University of Twente. His research interests include eHealth design, requirements engineering, trust in eServices, and information seeking behavior, and he holds a research line in requirements engineering for Telemedicine services. He has participated in numerous design projects, (as diverse as eGovernment services, eHealth services, and Internet search engines). Recently, he co-edited a special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication on designing better user experiences for self-service systems.

Reinoud Achterkamp

Reinoud Achterkamp received his BSc and MSc degree in (Neuro)Psychology in 2011 from the University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands. He is currently working at Roessingh Research and Development as an external PhD candidate. His research focuses on combining knowledge from behavioral science with telemedicine. More specifically, he is working on development, implementation and evaluation of smart personalized adaptive feedback strategies for an ambulant activity based feedback module.

Akshita holds a B.Tech and MS by Research degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIIT-Hyderabad, India. She started her PhD at the University of Twente in 2015 and is affiliated to the Biomedical Signals and Systems (BSS) group. Her research project is part of the eNHANCE project and her current work focuses on development of adaptive support intelligence to be used in upper extremity support system for day-to-day activities, rehabilitation and motivation of stroke and DMD patients.

Her research interests lie in the field of multimodal human computer/robot interaction, adaptive assistive technology and machine learning.

Fieke Everts

Fieke’s ambition is to increase the supply and quality of e-health for cancer outpatients. She is investigating to what extent two different e-health interventions work in lowering fatigue after cancer. Her PhD-project is a collaboration between the RRD and the Helen Dowling Institute, a clinical psycho-oncology practice center in Utrecht/Bilthoven.

Nick received his B.A. and M.Eng. degree in Engineering for the Life Sciences from the University of Cambridge. His PhD topic is part of the MobiGuide project and is entitled "Clinical Decision Support for the Mobile Patient". It involves research on the appropriate knowledge acquisition mechanisms and reasoning techniques for mobile devices.

Irfan is a Masters Electrical Engineering Student. He is doing his combined Masters-PhD research in a part of NeuroCIMT project titled 'Wearable Neuro Biofeedback'. His goal is to define a minimal sensing system with real time biofeedback for assessing movement in Stroke and Multiple Sclerosis subjects.

Sabine Janssen received a MSc degree in Medicine at the Radboud University in Nijmegen in 2013. She then started as a resident in Neurology at the Radboud university medical center. In 2015 she started her PhD at the University of Twente, investigating whether cueing via Smartglasses can reduce freezing of gait in patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

Angelos received his Master’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, in 2014, at the Democritus University of Thrace, in Greece.

His PhD project is part of the ‘KNEEMO’ project, an EU Marie Curie ITN for knee osteoarthritis research, and is performed in close collaboration between UT, Xsens, and VUMC.

His research focuses on the estimation of body movements, forces and joint moments using wearable sensors.

Henk earned his MSc degree in Electrical Engineering in 2010 at the University of Twente. His PhD project is part of the ‘PowerSensor’ project where his topic is ambulatory assessment of upper extremity kinematics and kinetics. The project aim is developing optimal algorithms that will be applied in a ‘PowerGlove’.

Tom’s MSc degree is in Systems and Control at the University of Twente. His PhD project is part of the European SoftPro project. The project is about developing fundamentals and technologies for synergy based prosthetics and rehabilitation devices. Specifically Tom’s research is about multi-modal distributed sensing. His topics of interest are Signal Analysis, Estimation and Control, Software Development and System Modelling and Simulation.

In 2007, I started my study Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. During my college years I have been working for the Experimental Center of Technical Medicine (ECTM) as a student assistant. I finished my master degree in Technical Medicine in 2013 with a master thesis performed at the ICU of Erasmus MC – Sophia Children’s Hospital. In December 2014 at started working at the ECTM at the University of Twente. My work consists of 50 percent of teaching and 50 percent of doing my PhD.

Hossein holds a MSc degree in Computer Science from the Technical university of Eindhoven. He also holds a PDEng degree in Healthcare Systems Design from the same university. His main research interest lies in applying data analysis and data mining techniques to the data collected in telemedicine solutions. His PhD topic is part of the PERSSILAA project where he will be investigating patient adherence to the provided health services.

In 2005, I started to study Technical Medicine in 2005. After internships, I started my graduation research project at the department of pulmonology at the Medisch Spectrum Twente in Enschede. After graduation I started working at the ECTM, where I combine research and education focused at respiratory physiology. My research is located at the Department of Intensive Care at the Radboud University Medical Centre of Nijmegen, where I work as a PhD student focused at noninvasive ventilation.

 

 

 

Wendy Oude Nijeweme – d’Hollosy

In January 2014 I started my PhD research on the eLabEL project of the Center for Care in Technology Research. My research topics are interoperability of IT technology in primary care and the design, development, and evaluation of a generic clinical decision support system (CDSS) in eLabEL focused on commonplace musculoskeletal/sports problems in primary care patients.

Josien is an occupational therapist and holds a MSc degree in Human Movement Sciences. Her PhD project is part of the Acare2Move project, and involves the design, evaluation, adaptation and implementation of a telerehabilitation service to enable rehabilitation at home for cancer patients following a major thoracic or abdominal surgery. Her main research topics include telemonitoring, (ambulatory) feedback, and behavioral change with the use of e-health.

In 2012, I finished my bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente. And I continued my studies in Mechanical Engineering at this university (with a specialization in Biomechanical Engineering). The master thesis I did was about building a balance controller that would only support healthy walking people whenever there was a need to. This assignment was finished in the beginning of 2015 after which I started to work in the BSS group as a PhD student on the MiniSens project

Jan Holsheimer

Jan Holsheimer got the MS degree in biology (neurophysiology, biophysics) in Groningen and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering in Twente (Department of Electrical Engineering). Since 1986 his research was focused on computer-based modeling of therapeutic electrical stimulation for the relief of chronic pain. He is retired since 2007, but still involved in some projects.

After receiving the PhD degree he became Head of the Neuroregulation Group, Department of Physiology, Leiden University. Since 1997 he is part-time Professor in Neurophysiology at the BMTI / Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Twente. His research interests are neuroregulation and neurotechnology, especially in the field of nerve regeneration.

Wim Rutten, professor of Neural Engineering, has a background in (bio)physics and biomedical engineering. He leads the theme Neural and Cellular Engineering, with present emphasis on 1) (intelligent) neural interfacing via cell-cultured multi-micro-electrode probes and 2) the understanding of the brain (circuit dynamics, learning, plasticity) through in vitro neural network research 3) EEG-based Brain-Computer Interfaces for neurofeedback in rehabilitation.

Ing Widya

Ing Widya has retired. However in part-time, he is still involved in some research activities which relate to the European project MobiGuide. His current focus is on requirements elicitation in telemedicine that aligns with the evidence-based way of doing medicine, and partly on Quality of Data (QoD) of monitored clinical variables and their clinical abstractions, including the impact of QoD on clinical interventions. In his research, collaboration with medical professionals plays an important role.
