Attoliter droplets for the investigation of single biomolecules
This project aims at investigating the properties of single enzyme molecules. Devices will be developed that generate tiny water droplets in oil, flowing through micro- or nanofluidic channels. The aim is to generate water droplets with a diameter of 1 mm (volume 1 attoliter), which on average each can contain one enzyme molecule. These droplets will then be mixed with droplets that contain a controlled amount of substrate solution. In each droplet the reaction catalyzed by a single enzyme can be followed for example by optical means.
