Creating a new UT-website: overview of possibilities

Below we sum up all different templates and possibilities that are available for UT websites. Option 1 is the UT default template for everybody. For institutes (and research groups within institutes) there is a special institute template available.

For student associations and projects (in which the UT provides less than 50% contribution to the content) it is possible to make exceptions (such as option 4).

The following overview illustrates all of the available options:

Option 1: Default UT template, corporate style

The default UT template is available for all departments and projects at the UT. This so-called minisite has an own title at the top and its own menu on the left side. All components (header, footer, social media channels etc.) can be personalised within the possibilities that are offered by the UT template.

Example

http://www.utwente.nl/test/website-default (intranet)

Advantages:

  • Simple: very simple to use and set up, no website knowledge necessary
  • Findable: the website is easy to find on the web (meets all technical requirements)
  • Style: updated to the new UT-style with a huge amount of possibilities for the creation of attractive websites
  • Mobile: fully optimised for the use on mobile devices
  • Connected to the UT news/event system (NEO) (add news from other UT sites with only 1 click)

Disadvantages:

  • Customisability within the possibilities of the UT-style, not possible to program features by yourself

Option 2: Default UT template, institute style

Also an ' old white'  template but in institute style with the colour of the institute (and their research groups). Some extra possibilities to present content in a more attractive way.

Example

www.utwente.nl/ctit or

www.utwente.nl/ewi/aa

Advantages:

  • Simple: very simple to use and set up, no website knowledge necessary; you just upload your tekst, pictures and video
  • Search engine optimalization: website is easy to find on the web (meets all technical requirements)
  • Style: completely UT institute style
  • Extra options for a more attractive presentation compared to option 1
  • Participating in the UT news/event systeem (NEO) to share news/events with other website (add news/events created by others with 1 click)

Disadvantages:

  • Not yet optimalized for mobile devices
  • New design coming very late, probably around 2016/2017

Same as options 1, but without UT logo in the left upper corner to offer a more neutral style.  Only available for projects/events where the UT part is less than 50% and if in these cases it would be undesired to use the UT branding. All differences are explained on the test

Example:

www.utwente.nl/test/website-nobranding (also available on your own domain name like www.projectabc.eu)

Advantages:

  • Simple: very simple to use and set up, no website knowledge necessary; you just upload your tekst, pictures and video
  • Search engine optimalization: website is easy to find on the web (meets all technical requirements)
  • Style: UT logo and footer (blue links) removed to offer a more neutral style. Still the black white UT colours though.
  • Mobile: fully optimised for the use on mobile devices
  • Connected to the UT news/event system (NEO) (add news from other UT sites with only 1 click)
  • The UT branding elements have been removed

Disadvantages:

  • Customisability within the possibilities of the UT-style, not possible to program features by yourself

Option 4: Webspace only, do it yourself

Web address and webspace on a UT webserver but without a website. This option is for projects or large events that need to design and build the whole website themselves, for example by using Wordpress or Joomla. Access can be arranged by m-number. Only available for student associations or large projects with less than 50% UT participation. Everything above 50% should use UT design.

Example:

www.dimensie.utwente.nl (student ass.) or www.geobia2016.com

Advantages:

  • Possible within *utwente.nl and with own domain name
  • Complete design and functionalities created by yourself

Disadvantages:

  • You need to have a knowledge and time to design/build everything yourself
  • No helpdesk available (exept for setting up your webspace)
  • You need to arrange search engine optimalization and findability of the website completly yourself (for utwente.nl/* this is arranged by the central UT webteam).

There are application forms for websites within and outside of utwente.nl available.
