Developing digital education environments 09-01-2015

How will the UT make use of digital testing? How and where will we set up MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses, free online courses)? And how will we handle blended learning? Digitalization in education is an important spearhead in the accentuated Vision 2020 strategy.

The UT will complete its vision on digitalization in education in spring of 2015. In the meantime, various aspects of digitalization in education at the UT are already being developed. Of course the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation already possesses a wealth of knowledge regarding distance learning. By means of digital support for marking and assessing student work, pilots are being carried out for various degree programmes. What's more, a digital portfolio is available for our students, in which academic skills can be filed.

MOOC development

The UT is currently developing two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The themes of these MOOCs are 'Smart Cities' and 'Medical Imaging'. They will be launched through Futurelearn in 2015.

Currently, two teams are working on the design of the MOOCs. A support team set up by the service departments (ICTS, CES, B&A and M&C) provides advice and support to both teams regarding engineering and technology, copyright issues, marketing and, of course, educational support. After the design phase has been completed, expectations are that the teams will start developing the digital study materials, including videos, exams and assignments, in February. The plan is for the registration period for the first two MOOCs to start before the summer.

For most courses, no specific certificate or prior knowledge is required. A MOOC can be followed by anyone, anywhere in the world. It can bring many students to the UT and is the perfect way to put the UT on the map, both in the Netherlands and abroad. And for busy professionals it's a good opportunity to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills in an extremely flexible way.
