Experiment 18 - How fast do icebergs melt?

What are we researching?

In this project we investigate how large ice blocks of up to 2 meter in height melt in fresh and saline water. We will measure the morphology of the ice block while it is melting. Next to that we will also perform temperature measurements and visualize the flow around the ice block. Due to the salinity fresh melt water will rise close to the ice surface, whereas further away from the ice cold saline water will descend creating intricate patterns in the ice.

Why does this matter?

This research will further the understanding of the life time of real icebergs and improve the predictions of global sea-water rise.
