Polarization stabilizes hBN Polar edges determine shape of hBN islands

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), often referred to as 'white graphene', is a promising 2D material. The structure is very similar to that of graphene. Researches from the Physics of Interfaces and Nanomaterials group have now shown that, while the bond in graphene is purely covalent, the partly ionic character of the bond in hBN plays a decisive rol in the shape of growing hBN. They publish their results this week in 2DMaterials.
