Quantitative Small Amplitude Atomic Force Spectroscopy

Figure 1 By accurately modeling the dynamics of the AFM cantilever, the interaction forces can be extracted from the Amplitude and Phase response of the cantilever upon approach toward and retract from the solid surface.

In Atomic Force Spectroscopy the Amplitude and Phase response of the cantilever are monitored during approach toward and retract from the solid sample surface.

To extract the conservative and dissipative interaction forces between the cantilever tip and the surface, the measurement system is modeled as a harmonic oscillator.

If the amplitude of the cantilever is sufficiently small, the interaction forces can be linearised and the harmonic oscillator equation can be solved analytically. Using the solution, the force inversion equations are derived and thus the interaction forces can be calculated from the measurements.
