Project Successfully Completed: Functionalised Clays for Biogas Separation

Tuesday 30 June 2026

We are proud to announce the successful completion of the NWO Demonstrator project Functionalised Clays for Biogas Separation. During the final meeting with our project partners and sounding board members, we presented the results of the design, development, and successful operation of the pilot plant.

The pilot installation, located at the wastewater treatment plant of Waterschap Vechtstromen in Hengelo, has been operating continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without interruption for a month. The achieved gas purity closely matches the predictions from our process models, confirming the robustness and reliability of the technology.

An important outcome of the project is the establishment of CarbSorbTec B.V., which will continue the technological development and commercialization of this innovative biogas upgrading technology.

As CarbSorbTec co-directors Frieder Mugele and Eelco Linnert stated: “The results of our tests form a solid basis for further technological development and commercial exploitation.”

The pilot plant will remain in operation to further validate the technology and optimize the process under long-term operating conditions.

We would like to sincerely thank NWO, all project partners, sounding board members, and everyone involved for their valuable contributions, commitment, and excellent collaboration throughout this project.
