Project Description

Development of an economically feasible salt separation technology for treatment of water of lower salt concentration than sea water (salt content between 0.5 and 30 g/L) is of key relevance for a sustainable society. However, state-of-art desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis, distillation and electrodialysis become suboptimal when the salt concentration decreases. The objective of this project is to understand and develop materials and theory of porous electrodes, and utilize this knowledge to design and validate a prototype desalination system in which electrodes are made of thin electronically conductive wires covered with a layer of porous carbon and ion-exchange membranes (IEMs).
