Sebastiaan Waanders was born in Zwolle in 1985. After completing his Gymnasium high school programme, he studied Applied Physics (Materials Science MSc track) at the University of Twente. After an internship at the IBM Thomas J Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, USA, he graduated from the Interfaces and Correlated Electron systems group under supervision of prof. Hans Hilgenkamp and prof. Alexander Brinkman on the topic of high temperature superconductors. He then moved to the MD&I group to apply his knowledge of physics in a (bio)medical environment and to pursue his PhD degree.


Sebastiaan’s research is embedded in the Arthur project. Together with both clinical (MST Enschede & RUNMC Nijmegen) and industrial partners (Kryoz, DKMS and Panton), we aim to develop a novel concept for the magnetic detection of sentinel lymph nodes in the diagnosis of breast cancer. In this project we have developed sensing technology which allows for selective detection of just the magnetic nanoparticles without the background signal which usually obfuscates the magnetization from the tracer, limiting sensor performance. This sensing concept, termed Differential Magnetometry or DiffMag, is currently patent pending.
