Biography

My name is Joana Covelo and I was born in Aveiro, a sea-side city in Portugal. When I was 18 years old, I moved to Coimbra to complete my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Coimbra (Portugal). Currently, I am a second-year master student at the University of Twente, in the track of Neural and Motor systems. As part of my master’s degree, I spent last semester doing an internship at the University of Genova (Italy), where I explored the potential of novel micro-electrode arrays in the study of neuronal electrophysiology. I am now excited to start my master thesis project at the Clinical Neurophysiology Group, where I hope to contribute to the fantastic work being developed in the discovery of the intriguing wonders of the human brain.

Research interests

Lewy bodies are inclusions of clustered protein, which can be found in the brains of patients who suffered from Dementia with Lewy Bodies or Parkinson’s Disease. The aim of my thesis assignment is to better comprehend the mechanisms that underlie the correlation between the amount of Lewy Bodies and the severity of the dementia. The study will be conducted on neuronal cultures differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells, coupled to micro-electrode arrays.
