I am currently working on the design and fabrication of a fast microsensor to diagnose bacterial infections in COPD exacerbations. Patients with COPD (chronic bronchitis with reduced lung function) have a lung attack 1-3 times a year (exacerbation). Exacerbations lead to a sharp decline in the quality of life and are a great burden for the patient and his family. It is of great importance in the acute phase of an exacerbation to quickly distinguish whether it is caused by a bacterial infection or not, to prevent overtreatment, side effects and resistance. The device I am working on will be an improved screening tool, quick and portable, a hand-held device for diagnosis at hospitals or at home.
