Master assignment: Mesoporous ceramic membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration

Much industrial and academic research has focused on aqueous-based separations, such as desalination and wastewater treatment. These membranes are however often incompatible with many organic solvents, not possessing the required durability and performance. A new class of hybrid membranes with the required characteristics suitable for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has received much interest from academia and industry alike. It is in this field, specifically the post-fabrication modification of inorganic membranes with organic polymers, that the Master’s student will perform his research.

The master’s project will consist of first grafting polymer(s) of choice onto a porous ceramic support, characterizing the resulting membrane as well as analyzing its performance in diverse solvents and solutes. The ideal membrane is to be stable in a range of harsh solvents, reject solutes smaller than 500 Da, and be easily reproducible while also demonstrating advantageous performance compared to similar processes.

A focus on material science or process modeling is student-dependent. The student is encouraged to bring his/her own ideas.
