Superconducting nanostructure first step towards Majorana fermion
An international team of researchers has succeeded in making the surface of a so-called topological insulator superconducting by placing it in between two superconducting electrodes. This nanoscale sandwich construction is an important step towards the discovery of a new particle: the elusive Majorana fermion. The researchers from the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente, the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter, the High Field Magnetic Laboratory of Radboud University Nijmegen, Leiden University and the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials of the University of Wollongong (Australia) published their results on 19 February 2012 online in the journal Nature Materials.

ICE students give science show
ICE students give science show
On Friday 22 October members of our group demonstrated physics and chemistry experiments at the Prinseschool in Enschede as part of their Halloween celebration. The entire morning the children learned about fun physics in the kitchen with corn starch, apples, pears and CO2, about electricity with a Van de Graaff generator and about really cool physics with liquid nitrogen. The gallery shows some of the experiments, the Halloween costumes of the children and children being interviewed by a visiting reporter of RTV Oost radio.

Introduction to the Physics of Correlated Electrons
For Ph.D. as well as advanced M.Sc students, Dr. Alexander Golubov will give a course on correlated electron systems in the coming 3rd quarter. Topics are low-dimensional and disordered metals and semiconductors, f- and d-electron intermetallics and transition metal compounds such as high temperature superconductors. These materials are characterized by strong interactions between the charge carriers and are generally called correlated electronic systems.
