Materials Science & Engineering | Science and Technology Faculty (TNW)

The multidisciplinary programme Materials Science & Engineering comprises 2 years of study in which you will need to amass a total of 120 EC.

YEAR 1

In the first year you will gather 60 EC, spread out over courses in three categories:

Joint specialisation courses
The following four courses are joint specialisation courses for all Master’s students in the Materials Science & Engineering programme:
- Inorganic Materials Science (5 EC)
- Surfaces and Thin Layers (5 EC)
- Phase Transformations in Manufacturing (5 EC)
- AMM-Characterisation (5 EC)
Compulsory discipline courses
The following courses are compulsory discipline courses.

If you are enrolled via the Master's of Applied Physics, you take the following compulsory courses:
- Quantum Mechanics 2 (5 EC)
- Mathematical and Numerical Physics (5 EC)
- Heat and Mass Transfer (5 EC)
- Small Signals Detection (5 EC)
- Ethical and Cultural Awareness (1 EC)
If you are enrolled via the Master's of Chemical Engineering, you take the following compulsory courses:
- AMM-Molecular and Biomolecular Chemistry and Technology (5 EC)
- AMM-Organic Materials Science (5 EC)
- Statistical Thermodynamics (2.5 EC)
- AMM-Project Organic Materials (5 EC)
- AMM-Project Inorganic Materials and Molecular Science and Technology (5 EC)
If you are enrolled via the Master's of Mechanical Engineering, you take 30ECs worth of compulsory courses. Contact the study-adviser of Mechanical Engineering to find out which courses are compulsory for you.
Elective courses
With your selection from a large set of elective courses you complete your programme to obtain the required 60 EC and lay the theoretical basis for your multidisciplinary programme.

Complementing these courses, a number of joint activities are offered for all students enrolled in this multidisciplinary programme, such as colloquia, excursions to companies, and informal meetings.

YEAR 2

The second year of the multidisciplinary programme Materials Science & Engineering consists of a compulsory internship (20 EC) and your master's assignment (40 EC). During the internship, you will learn how to apply the knowledge acquired in the first year in a corporate or institutional environment. Your master’s assignment will get you working independently on the solution of either a practical challenge from business or industry, or on a theoretical (open) question.
