In biotechnology processes, specific therapeutics agents have to be isolated and separated from complex mixtures also containing other proteins, lipids, sugars etc. Current purification methods are often not suitable for labile and heat sensitive agents.

The aim of the project is to develop a purification method based on the field-flow fractionation (FFF) technique (which uses a membrane to retain the proteins but passes the carrier solution - usually an aqueous buffer solution) under mild conditions and continuous operation. The project is of the STW program entitled “SmartSep” (2011-2015).
