Paper on novel memory effect published in Optica

Random scattering is not as random as thought before.

The performance of microscopic imaging in biological tissue suffers from random scattering of light. By examining wave correlations in forward scattering media, we show that this scattering process is not as random as was previously thought. These wave correlations may be exploited for deep tissue microscopy, and other forms of imaging inside turbid materials.

This work is a joint effort with researchers from the Charité hospital, Berlin. The paper 'Generalised optical memory effect' by Gerwin Osnabrugge, Roarke Horstmeyer, Ioannis Papadopoulos, Benjamin Judkewitz and Ivo Vellekoop is freely available here.
