Research Developing a 3D hiPSC derived cardiac model
Marcelo Ribeiro did his bachelor in Biochemistry in the University of Sciences of Lisbon University (FCUL). In 2008 he moved to the Netherlands where he completed his Master in Drug Innovation at Utrecht University. During his master program Marcelo did a 9 month internship in the He Lab at the department of Molecular Cell Biology of the University California Berkeley, USA, studying the role of microRNA 34a in Lung cancer. After concluding his master thesis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Christine Mummery in the application of hiPSC to drug discovery and development, Marcelo started his PhD in the same department researching hiPSC derived cardiomyocyte maturation and disease modeling. During his PhD Marcelo spent one month in the Feinberg Lab in the department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, USA, learning micro-contact printing in soft substrates and traction force microscopy technique. In 2015 Marcelo was involved in the Crack IT challenge, a consortium between research groups and GSK funded by NC3R for the development of hiPSC 2D platform for animal replacement in drug development. Marcelo currently has a Post-Doc appointment at the AST department of Twente University, developing a 3D hiPSC derived cardiac model.
