SCIENTIFIC EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Prof. Dr. Joost D de Bruijn (1966) obtained his PhD Cum Laude from Leiden University, The Netherlands, in 1993 for his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Bone-bonding and biodegradation of calcium phosphates’. In 1996, he joined the Dutch start-up tissue engineering company IsoTis Orthobiology BV where he headed the bone tissue engineering programme until 2003, which resulted in the execution of two clinical trials using stem cells in orthopaedic and dental applications. Joost founded Xpand Biotechnology BV in 2004 on biomaterial and bioreactor technology and spun-out its osteoinductive calcium phosphate technology to Progentix Orthobiology BV in 2008 after a series A investment. After further development of the technology and showing robust proof of concept in preclinical studies, this led in 2009 to a partial $80m trade sale to the global top 5 spine company NuVasive Inc., with the option for full acquisition upon reaching certain milestones. Dental and craniomaxillofacial use of the osteoinductive calcium phosphate technology was transferred to Revisios BV that signed a collaboration contract with a global top 3 dental company in 2011. Joost currently acts as CEO of all three companies. His activities in Twente relate to academic research on tissue instructive materials and bioreactor technology as well as scouting and supporting regenerative medicine related activities aimed to exploitation and valorisation in the MIRA institute. To date, Joost has published 132 papers in peer-reviewed journals and is inventor of 28 international patents.

Additional professional activities:

Joost is scientific editor of the European Cells and Materials journal (Impact factor 9.65) and acts on the editorial board of several biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine related journals. Joost served as Vice-President and Secretary of the 8th World Biomaterials Congress, in Amsterdam (2008) and was appointed Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) by the international liaison committee.
