Research
Worldwide, many patients suffer from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This could be innate or it could be due to an injury or an unhealthy lifestyle. Diabetes and obesity are risk factors that today’s society encounters and increase the incidence of ESRD. ESRD patients need a therapy, because their kidneys do not function appropriately. A kidney transplantation would be the best treatment for ESRD patients, however the availability of donor kidneys is limited. Therefore, these patients generally depend on extracorporeal blood purification treatments like hemodialysis.
The disadvantages of current hemodialysis treatments are lengthy hospital visits and limited removal of middle molecular weight and protein-bound waste products. This project is focused on the improvement of blood compatibility and sieving characteristics of hemodialysis membranes. Hollow fibers and modules based on SlipSkinTM will be developed. Doping of the biomaterial with an anticoagulant agent or with a platelet inhibitor will also be investigated to further improve blood compatibility.
