No delays are expected, as both medical images and software systems are already available.

C. Overige opmerkingen

As this project is a collaboration between the ‘Laboratorium voor Klinische en Experimentele Beeldverwerking’ (LKEB) and the section Nuclear Medicine, both institutions will provide their assistance when needed.

The maximum number of students working on this project is four; however, ideally we want a smaller group of three students working on this project.

Fusion of myocardial perfusion SPECT with High-resolution cardiac CT

Cardiovascular diseases and ischemic heart diseases in particular, are a major health problem in westernized countries. However, a significant number of the morbidity and mortality resulting from these diseases could be prevented. Therefore, cardiovascular medicine has concentrated on prevention, early diagnosis and risk stratification in the recent years. Non-invasive imaging techniques are an essential tool in realizing this approach.

The application of both computed tomography (CT) and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) in the evaluation of ischemic heart diseases are well established. High-resolution CT is generally used to evaluate cardio-vascular anatomy and to indentify coronary atherosclerosis, whereas, MPS is used to visualize cardiac perfusion patterns and to discriminate between normal, ischemic or infarcted regions within the myocardium. Therefore it is often stated that both imaging modalities provide complementary information for the diagnosis and stratification of patients with ischemic heart diseases. The integration of CT and MPS is known to improve the clinical decision-making in certain patient populations. These hybrid images do not have to be acquired on the same scanner, but can also be fused during post-processing of the data.

During this project, the students will work on a fusion tool that will create hybrid images by combining the MPS data with the high-resolution CT data using either Matlab or MeVisLab (has to be determined during the project). If a clinical applicable fusion tool is created within the duration of the project, and there is enough time left, a validation study using clinical patient data will also be conducted.
