The track Medical Sensing and Stimulation is part of the Master's programme Technical Medicine. Graduates from this programme, Technical Physicians, will have an innovative role in the field of technical-medical diagnosis and treatment. For example, being an advisor or co-therapist in a multidisciplinary patient oriented treatment team. Improvements in patient care can be realized by integrating advanced technology in novel medical procedures. Both this track and Medical Imaging and Interventions of this Master's are designed to educate new health care professionals working on the further development of the path from diagnosis to intervention.
The track Medical Sensing and Stimulation focuses on the acquisition, processing and interpretation of medical signals (diagnostics) and the use of signals to stimulate and thereby correct or improve impaired functions of the human organism (therapy).

Graduates who have followed this Master’s track have a good insight in the clinical context in which medical signals are relevant, and are able to initiate and develop innovations in the use of these signals.
What graduates can do
They can use their knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, signal acquisition and processing for various clinical applications. They are capable of performing patient measurements independently in different situations, ranging from an out-of-hospital setting to measurements in the operating room or intensive care unit. They can process and interpret these data so as to contribute to a more reliable or efficient diagnosis, or to novel therapies. In addition, Technical Physicians of this track are trained to use signals for therapeutic applications, for example by using deep-brain stimulation in the treatment of movement disorders or epilepsy.
The first year of the three-year programme consists of courses that offer technological deepening in a clinical context. Each semester is completed with two clinical skills courses, an optional course and a clinical case. Students can choose the optional course freely from all master subjects offered by the university (or other universities).
In the clinical case students can apply the technological and technical-medical expertise they learn during the different courses. Cases are presented and (co-)assessed by clinicians and involve technical-medical problems which clinicians are currently faced with in clinical practice and where technology can assist in diagnosis or treatment.

The second and third year consist of internships in the clinic, four 10-week internships in the second year and a full year Master's thesis and internship in the third year. Students will apply, deepen and integrate the acquired knowledge and expertise in a clinical context, including further training of various clinical skills.
