The Hospital of the Future is an initiative of the University of Twente (UT), Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST), FME and Twente Board Development, working together with regional, national and international partners. Knowledge institutions, healthcare organisations and companies collaborate on innovative healthcare concepts and medical technologies. Twente aims to achieve a tenfold increase in healthcare productivity by 2050 through the use of medical technology. This will help meet the growing demand for care despite increasing staff shortages, while maintaining high-quality, accessible healthcare.
Building on a strong scientific foundation, new healthcare concepts are being developed in Twente across a broad range of disciplines, from Technical Medicine and medical technology to imaging, chip technology, data and robotics.
The TechMed Centre functions as a practical lab. Here, new technologies are not only conceived but also tested and applied. In close collaboration with, among others, Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST), FME, Twente Board, companies and regional partners, healthcare processes are being redesigned, with the aim of better care with fewer people.
On 5 November 2026, the eighth edition of the TechMed Event will take place at the University of Twente in Enschede. The theme is: 'Hospital of the Future: Transforming healthcare with smart medical technology'. Professionals from different sectors will come together on this day to translate technological developments into the healthcare of tomorrow. During the TechMed Event, we explore themes that determine the course for the hospital of the future. Tickets are available, and accreditation can be requested.
