Significant reduction in CO2 emissions from flights

Significant reduction in CO2 emissions

In 2025, the University of Twente achieved a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions from employee flights. Figures from our BI dashboard show that emissions are well below the trend line required to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030.

The data shows that emissions from flights in 2025 were 55% lower than in the reference year 2019. There is also a clear reduction of 37% compared to 2024. This result is mainly the result of acute measures that were introduced to limit the number of flights charged to the first funding stream. The sharp decrease shows that acute measures and conscious choices do indeed have an effect.

This year, the SEE programme will research the options to maintain a structural reduction. We are considering internal or external CO₂ compensation or partially maintaining the restrictions on flights.

Since 2025, UT has published all flight data of services and faculties online, and this data is accessible to every employee.
