UTCuriousUSummer courses overviewThe complexity of water-reuse

Summer school: The complexity of water-reuse

Admission & participation info

Typically, our wastewater streams are treated and discharged in nature. However, both droughts and increasing concerns on (micro)pollutants will dictate that different water treatment and re-use strategies need to be employed. From a technical point of view, treating and upgrading waste-water streams for re-use is already well within our capabilities. Dense and selective membranes are well designed to effectively retain even the smallest pollutants, giving the quality needed for re-use. Yet some important issues remain:

  • Techno-Economically

What are the overall treatment costs and how does this compete with using potable or groundwater as a source?

  • Environmentally

How do properly deal with the concentrate that will contain pollutants and inert components?

  • Footprint

Can we objectively argue that the treatment and re-use is and overall gain in terms of CO2-, water-, and greywater footprint?

  • Geographically

Often, the treatment techniques are performed at centralized wastewater treatments plants, while the treated water is needed locally. How can we solve or overcome this issue?

  • Governance

Who owns the treated water: Government, end-users, or maybe a commercial entity responsible for the treatment? Who bares the operational and capital responsibilities?

Challenge-based learning

This course is offered within the context of challenge-based learning. Participants will be divided into teams to tackle real-life challenge together with experts from their fields. They will be asked to design a complete wastewater treatment and re-use scheme for a decentralized industrial area. This industrial area consists of several industrial companies that currently use ground and potable water as their water source. Many users already treat their incoming water to their specific needs (e.g., hardness removal). After use, water with different pollutants is discharged to the sewage system, accompanied by a discharge cost for the companies. In your design take a multidisciplinary approach, tackling all technical, economic, environmental aspects as well as the overall governance.

CuriousU will take place on 13-22 August, 2023. Have a look at our admission requirements or the fee. If you have questions about your admission you can try our admission check. Undecided? Sign-up for our newsletter.
