Summer school: Fossil free cities

The world evolves toward non-fossil, renewable energy. The course Fossil Free Cities is about the implementation.  It covers groups work every morning and lectures by practitioners every afternoon.

Course details

We learn about possibilities from global trailblazers who already have realized a fossil free area. We also meet initiatives that encourage shifts to the fossil free businesses and cities. We get to know about the diversity of citizens initiatives and businesses and learn about how to start a social enterprise for fossil free schools, clubs etc.. The initiatives for fossil free mobility are invited, as well.

How can we create fossil free cities?Dr. Yoram Krozer (course leader)

Above all, this course is hands-on. You will take part in process of searching opportunities for a fossil free campus of the University of Twente. During a few days, small groups will elaborate on proposals for that campus. You will collect and process information and decide in the groups about actions with assistance of professors. Good, tangible groups proposals will be awarded. The expected results are: learning about various initiatives aiming at fossil free energy consumption various levels, assessing ideas for energy efficiency and renewable energy, developing concept and making proposal for implementation of the viable ideas.

Topics

During the groups work, you will assess opportunities for the fossil-free campus of the University of Twente and propose actions. Professors of the University of Twente will help with the tasks. Sound proposals will be awarded. During, practitioners will show about the implementation of fossil-free energy. Topics are:

  • Global trailblazer presents fossil free island in Denmark (Fossil Free Samsø (Denmark).
  • Politician introduces local and regional energy systems. 
  • Shareholder explains turnaround of an oil corporation
  • Policymaker present actions toward the fossil free city (Fossil Free Policies).
  • Marketers show local energy initiatives and electric mobility.
  • Entrepreneurs present fossil-free business models (Fossil free corporations).
  • University campus as Living Lab
  • Fossil Free Amsterdam
  • Fossil Free Leeuwarden

Learning outcomes

  • Learn to generate ideas for the renewable energy actions.
  • Integrate technological and social issues into tangible proposals.
  • Get experiences with turning of academic knowledge into actions.
  • Learn how to make renewable energy accepted in business and policy.
  • Find out about marketing of initiatives and attracting stakeholders.

Lee Vinsel is an Assistant Professor of Science and Technology Studies at the Stevens Institute of Technology. He studied Philosophy and History of Technology. He will give a talk about maintenance and innovation in our current society. Capitalism excels at innovation but is failing at maintenance, and for most lives it is maintenance that matters more.

Dr. Ramirez-Marquez has been a researcher all his life with an interest in developing computational techniques to solve a variety of problems. His research efforts are currently focused on the reliability analysis and optimization of complex systems, the development of mathematical models for sensor networks operational effectiveness, the computational analysis of resilience and, the development of evolutionary optimization algorithms. He will give a talk about future trends in smart city research.

Course leader

Yoram Krozer (1953) received MsC in biology and MA in Economics at the University of Utrecht, Business Administration at InHolland, and PhD in Economics at the University of Groningen. His work started at non-governmental organisations, then shifted to industries, and he directed the Institute for Applied Environmental Economics - TME. After twenty five years in the private sector he joined the University of Twente as director of the Cartesius Institute, Institute for Sustainable Innovations of the Netherlands Technical University. He is now associated professor at the CSTM at the University of Twente, professor at the CIIRC at the Jyothi Institute of Technology, Honorary Fellow at the Melbourne University and Director of the Sustainable Innovations Academy. His work is on economics of sustainable development. He has co-created products, software, masters and vocational courses, published about hundred papers and two books “Innovations and the Environment” and “Theories and Practices on Innovations for Sustainable Development”.
