The use of English is becoming increasingly widespread in the academic world, so it is essential to understand academic English well. This course will help you achieve exactly that goal!

Our English for Academic Purposes course will enable you to become a more fluent and accurate user of English. You will develop the academic skills needed to study in English in an academic context in case for instance that you are interested in following a Master's abroad at an English-taught university. The course will help you to follow what you hear during lectures, understand what you need to note down, and recognize the pitfalls of English grammar.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • ask detailed questions and present your own opinion;
  • follow most of what is being said during lectures or presentations and make decisions about what to note down and what to omit as the lecture proceeds;
  • distinguish the main themes from irrelevancies and digressions;
  • make useful notes from written sources or assignments given verbally, capturing abstract concepts and the relationships between ideas;
  • present arguments clearly, using a limited range of expressions (vocabulary, grammatical structures);
  • write short texts with a clear message that can be followed fairly easily by the reader;
  • understand most of the visual signals that you are likely to come across;
  • handle most text types within a general academic subject area;
  • assess the relevance of textbooks and articles within your own subject area of study reasonably quickly;
  • build your knowledge of the distinctive lexical and structural features of academic language;
  • show increased understanding of the common pitfalls in English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation;
  • use a set of tools and techniques to continue improving your academic vocabulary.

Course details

For this course it´s  necessary to bring your own laptop (in order to prepare for the classes and do the writing assignments).

  • Entry level (CEF): B2
  • Attainment level (CEF): B2+
  • Target group: students who use English for their academic studies
  • Study load: attending every session is essential and active participation is expected. Homework is compulsory and is expected to take approximately two hours a day. The study load for this course is roughly equivalent to 1.5 ECTS.
