Summer school: Earth Observation & GIS for Engineering and Security

The course will cover the fundamental aspects of land spatial modelling and combine aspects of Geographic information systems and remote observation simultaneously, with the support of an integral and intuitive software-free package.

Topics on Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • Gentle introduction to Geographic Information Systems: Modelling Earth reality
  • Representing reality: GIS and Data types.
  • Placing things on Earth: Coordinate systems and georeferencing
  • Managing and storing information:
  • Databases and DMS Simple tabular information
  • Spatial and non-spatial data entry and manipulation
  • Spatial analysis with forms and images (vectors and rasters)
  • Data visualization and a glance to the interpolation functions

  • A glance to the Remote Sensing system: evolution and perspectives.
  • The physical foundation of Remote Sensing: the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Image interpretation: image bands, color coding and spectral reflectance relations

  • Field Ground true data collection with mobile devices and Digital image classification.

Tutorials

Powerful and free GIS and Remote Sensing tools for application.
Note: the examples and exercises will be oriented towards the use of spatial tools for human intervention in engineering and security.

Dr. Ramirez-Marquez has been a researcher all his life with an interest in developing computational techniques to solve a variety of problems. His research efforts are currently focused on the reliability analysis and optimization of complex systems, the development of mathematical models for sensor networks operational effectiveness, the computational analysis of resilience and, the development of evolutionary optimization algorithms. He will give a talk about future trends in smart city research.

He will give a talk about maintenance and innovation in our current society. Capitalism excels at innovation but is failing at maintenance, and for most lives it is maintenance that matters more.

Learning Outcomes

Participants assisting and participating of all activities, at the end of the course should be able to:

  • Understand and experience most of the components of a GIS and Remote Sensing system models.
  • Have an advance glossary on Earth Observation sciences allowing to understand more advance information or assist to middle to high ranked courses in specialized organization or courses.
  • Collect, input process and model reality in a GIS and Earth Observation software environment.
  • Visit, search and order high resolution free satellite imagery, followed by calibration and processing.
  • Organize and perform a data Ground true data collection campaign with portable hardware.

Course Aim

The course intends to add a temporal and spatial dimension to the mostly static parameters used in the analysis of human interventions in the society. Understanding of the spatial relationships to give a sensible ground to decision and support systems.

Course details

  • Entry level: no pre-knowledge in the science of GIS and Remote Sensing is needed.
  • Background: Participants might preferably have an engineering or any general Earth Science related background.
  • Target groups: any individual interests in any Earth science, engineering, spatial analysis related to the natural forces and human interventions in the society
  • Methods: The course consists with 7 days of active teaching, class experiences, practices and field experiences.
  • Course organization: Learning objectives are structured, linked and sequenced. The course will be fully supported with blending learning using the ELS Canvas Instructure.
  • Course additional value: Course compatible with the CORE of GIS and Remote Sensing offered at ITC Faculty at pre-master level.
  • Materials: All educational material and software is included and forever free.
