Get the right supplies
When cleaning, you will, of course, need various cleaning products and supplies. So, check if you have all the tools you need beforehand. Believe me, running to the supermarket all sweaty and in your old clothes because you've run out of all-purpose cleaner halfway through your big clean-up is the last thing you want to do. So, check your kitchen cupboards together and see if you have enough cleaning products, sponges, bin bags, and so on. Make a shopping list of what's missing (and make sure someone goes to get it). You might also want to do some laundry beforehand, so you have enough clean cloths and mops ready. Preparation is key!
Make a checklist
To prevent everyone from running around the house in total chaos, you need a checklist. It gives you a clear overview of what needs to be done and makes it easier to divide the tasks. And let's be honest: is there anything more satisfying than ticking off a to-do list?
So, before you start, gather your housemates and make a list of what needs to be done. Of course, there are the standard tasks, such as wiping surfaces, vacuuming and mopping, but don’t forget to add an extra deep clean. When was the last time you descaled the coffee machine, degreased the oven or thoroughly scrubbed the shower tiles? Exactly, so make sure to add those to your list ;). Pro tip: walk around your house and take a critical look around so you don't forget anything. Maybe you have a balcony that could use some tidying up, or a large collection of empty bottles that need to be disposed of. Every student house is different, so tailor your checklist to your own situation.
Teamwork makes the dream work
Plan a date when you are all available. After all, cleaning together is more fun and motivating than cleaning alone! This way, you also all put in the same amount of time, and that one housemate who always manages to dodge his cleaning duties will not get away with it this time. During the planned session, you will focus on the shared spaces of your house. If you still have time and energy left, you can always tackle your own room afterwards.
Work efficiently
The big cleaning day has finally arrived! Grab your list and assign each person or pair a room to clean, so you are not constantly in each other’s way. Start by clearing away any clutter, so that you have plenty of space to clean. Then work through your list step by step. Make it easy on yourself and work from top to bottom: this will prevent dust and dirt from falling on areas you have just cleaned. Feeling hot from all the hard work? Then be sure to open the windows. A little fresh air in the house is always a good idea! Have you ticked off everything on your checklist? Then finish with vacuuming and mopping, and your house will feel like new again.
Have fun
A cleaning day doesn't have to be dull. Chat while you work, put on some music or even listen to a podcast together. Be sure to take breaks as well, so your tasks remain manageable. And last but not least: agree on a nice reward for afterwards. Grab an ice cream together at Van der Poel, order pizzas, or get on the couch for a movie night. That way, you'll have something fun to look forward to, which will help you stay motivated.
Keep up the good work
Let’s be honest, we all know how quickly a clean and tidy house can suddenly turn back into chaos. That would be a shame, now that you've just cleaned your house from top to bottom! Luckily, small habits can make a big difference. For example, try to wash the dishes every day, put things back in their place after use, and wipe down the kitchen counter right after cooking. You'll see that this only takes a few extra minutes each day, but it will save you a lot of time during your weekly cleaning tasks and your next big clean!
With these tips, you're all set for spring. A big clean may require a bit of effort, but let's be honest: drinking coffee in a clean kitchen without a sticky floor does feel a whole lot better!
