1. DesignLab
Whether you study Creative Technology, Technical Medicine, or Mechanical Engineering, everyone is welcome at DesignLab to turn their ideas into reality! In four different workshops, you will find all the machines and tools you need to work on your UT-related projects, from 3D printers to sewing machines.
Rather work on a personal project? You can use the facilities for free during the Maker’s Nights, every Tuesday between 6 pm and 10 pm. And if you need some help operating the machines, you can sign up for one of the workshops, where you'll learn everything about 3D printing, sewing, or laser cutting. Please note, though: before you start working in a workspace for the first time, make sure to take a safety tour. Safety first!
2. Incubase & Novel-T
Are you thinking about starting your own business as a student? Then Incubase is the perfect place to work on your ideas, surrounded by other student entrepreneurs and business developers. Moreover, at Incubase, you can attend various activities by Novel-T, the start-up consultant on campus. During the startup workshop, for example, you will learn all the ins and outs of turning your idea into a startup in just one evening. Do you already have a good business idea? You can validate it during the START program. And the best thing: both workshops are completely free of charge!
3. Vrijhof
The Vrijhof offers way more than just a place for late-night study sessions during exam week; you can also follow plenty of (affordable) courses! Always wanted to try belly dancing, rapping, or glass fusing? Then this is the place to be. With a UnionCard, you can also book various music and dance studios for free.
4. Video Team
Would you like to record a podcast, presentation, or other video? Then contact the Video Team! As a student, you can use three different studios to record UT-related content for free. These include a DIY podcast studio, a DIY green screen studio, and Studio 200, with a talk show set-up. Don't forget to make a reservation in advance, though.
5. Xerox
You probably know Xerox from the printers in every corner of every UT building. But what you might not know is that Xerox staff are also available in person at Carré. Whether you want to bind your thesis, have business cards made, or print an A0 poster, Xerox has you covered. Not sure which type, size, finish, or colour of paper to choose? They are happy to help you decide!
6. Mental health
Student life can sometimes be quite challenging and overwhelming. To support your mental health, UT offers various courses, such as mindfulness training and stress management workshops. You can also use the Student Wellbeing Platform on Canvas, where you will find videos, advice, practical tips, useful links, and exercises related to mental health. At UT, you are never on your own: you can also always turn to various professionals for face-to-face support.
7. LISA Service Desk ICT & Laptop Project
The LISA Service Desk ICT is the go-to place for all your IT-related questions. You may know them from the Student Laptop Project, where you can purchase a laptop for your studies at a high discount. If you are unsure about which model to choose, the ICT Service Desk in Citadel will be happy to help you with all your questions. There, you can also see their offer of laptops with your own eyes. Having problems with a laptop purchased through this project? You can also go there for support and repairs (within your warranty period 😉). Also useful: through LISA, you can download all kinds of licensed software for free!
8. Writing Centre
The Writing Centre helps you with academic writing. During drop-in hours, every Monday and Wednesday between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm, you can get one-on-one help from tutors, who offer tips and support on language and structure. It doesn't matter whether you have just started writing or have already finished your final draft. Prefer a scheduled session with a tutor from a specific faculty or who speaks a specific language? Then make an appointment with a tutor of your choice. Moreover, at the Writing Centre, you can attend various workshops to take your writing skills to the next level. Be sure to check out their handouts for useful tips and tricks as well, for example, on concise writing and academic language.
9. University Library
In addition to study spaces, the University Library offers many other useful services. Through FindUT, you can find many e-books and articles, and borrow physical books, for example. The library also provides a handy overview of useful resources for every study programme. Furthermore, you can book not only project rooms, but also use their meditation cabin and sleeping pod!
10. Extracurricular courses
In addition to the courses in culture, writing, and mental health mentioned earlier, UT offers many other interesting extracurricular courses. With more than a hundred courses to choose from, there is something for everyone. For example, you can learn how to give a good pitch, how to present yourself convincingly during a job interview, or how to improve your academic English speaking skills. And no, they don't earn you any extra ECs, but they do give you useful skills that you will benefit from during your studies and beyond!
