13 struggles every UT student recognises

The life of a UT student is not all sunshine and rainbows. Sure, we have a great campus with everything we could possibly need, and the city itself is buzzing with student life – but hey, we also encounter problems and frustrations from time to time. Here are 13 struggles every UT student recognises!

Coffee mug

It's 08:45, you've just rolled out of bed and have a long day of lectures ahead of you. But first: coffee! Until you get to the coffee machine and realise you've left your reusable mug at home. Now let's hope your study association still has a mug lying around somewhere...

Horst Tower

For some reason, just when you're already running late, your lecture is always on the 11th floor of the Horst Tower. Taking the stairs, though? No way! After standing in line for the elevator for five minutes and finally squeezing yourself in, it stops at every single floor. Eventually, you realise you should have taken the stairs after all...

Lectures in the Waaier or Spiegel

You're happily typing away during your lecture in the Waaier or Spiegel, when your laptop suddenly says “5% remaining”. And of course, there's no power socket in sight. You consider taking notes with pen and paper, but after 10 minutes, you and your sore hand decide to give up. You'll remember the material by listening too, right…?

Group projects

UT wouldn't be UT without group projects. Somehow, you always end up in a group with that one control freak who wants to do everything their way, the fellow student who never responds to messages, and the passive one who doesn’t seem to care about anything. And you? You just try to keep the peace and make sure that you all write a decent report together.

Project rooms

With the project deadline approaching, you and your group want to rehearse the presentation in peace. So you try to book a room for the next day, only to discover that all the good ones in the Technohal or Ravelijn are already taken. In the end, you find yourselves at a table in the Bastille, promising (yet again) to book earlier next time.

Lecture halls

Studying on a campus with everything located together is super convenient. Until you have a lecture in the Horst Tower and have to be at your next lecture in the Vrijhof within 15 minutes. There goes your break... But hey, at least you stretched your legs ;)!

Carré and Cubicus

Finding a lecture hall, lab or lecturer's office in Carré is harder than solving the average escape room. Every time, you're faced with the same dilemma: should you go left or right? And every time, you end up walking all the way around again. And if you ever need to find a room in Cubicus, don’t even try…

Sunday morning

Ah, it's Sunday morning, you've had a good night's sleep, and you might be feeling a little hangover. Time for a croissant and some fresh orange juice! Full of enthusiasm, you walk to the supermarket, only to discover that it doesn't open until noon on Sundays...

Bicycle

‘’Where did I park my bike again?’’ is probably the most frequently asked question among students after a weekend away. Just when you're convinced it's been stolen, you suddenly see it in the train station parking lot!

Hengelosestraat

Whether you live in the city and have to go to your lecture, or live on campus and are heading out for a night in town, somehow Hengelosestraat always seems to be against you: either you have a headwind, or all the traffic lights are red. Every single time.

The Therm

It's exam week, you're quietly revising at home and eating breakfast. Until you suddenly remember that the exam isn't on campus, it’s at the Therm! Panic! Eventually, you arrive sweaty, but just in time... Just like everyone else.

The Sports Centre

Exams in the Sports Centre in winter are a true test of endurance. While you're fighting hard for your exam, you're also fighting the cold at the same time. Why the heating is never on there, no one knows...

The Grote Kerk

If you live in the centre of Enschede, you’re familiar: the Grote Kerk. Every quarter of an hour, it plays a melody, from early in the morning until late at night. You may find it annoying now. But hey, secretly it's just the charm of student life in Enschede and you'll miss it when you've graduated ;).

Well, if these are our biggest problems, things aren’t so bad after all, right? Because without chilly exam rooms, loud bell towers, and the eternal search for power sockets, we wouldn't have our vibrant student city and lively campus, where life never stands still. Except in the elevator of the Horst Tower ;).
