How stressed are you, according to your watch?

Your smartwatch knows how you sleep, how much you move – and even how stressed you are. But how accurate is that, really? Around 40% of people in the Netherlands use wearables to track their health. In this podcast by Universiteit van Nederland, we dive into the world of stress wearables with University of Twente professor Matthijs Noordzij. How do these devices measure stress? What do those scores do to your mind? And can they actually help us live healthier lives?

Smart insights or added pressure?

A red bar on your wrist, a stress score of 80 on your phone: useful feedback or an extra source of stress? Matthijs investigates how smart – and how reliable – stress wearables truly are. In the lab and in everyday life, he tests what these devices measure, where they fall short, and why stress is far more complex than a single number.

From the wrist to the doctor’s office

But this episode goes beyond technology alone. What happens when your stress is monitored constantly? Does it help you listen to your body more closely – or does it turn stress into a competition? And could these wearables one day play a role in the doctor’s office? A podcast episode (that you can listen to here on Spotify) about measuring, feeling, and the fine line between gaining control and letting go.

This topic is also explored in a previously published UT Stories article, How wearables help reduce stress for everyday well-being.
