When do you really need surgery?

What happens when a tear suddenly develops in your coronary artery? Do you need immediate surgery, or is medication enough? It’s a crucial and complex decision. In this video, technical physician Lennart van de Velde shows how a digital copy of your aorta helps doctors to choose the most appropirate treatment.

Lennart works at AmsterdamUMC and Rijnstate on the development of the digital twin: a computer model that replicates damaged aorta of a specific patient. The condition is simulated in detail within this model.

By calculating different scenarios, the model can predict how the tear may progress. Will the situation remain stable with medication? Or is surgery required to prevent a fatal rupture? In this way, the digital twin supports vascular surgeons in making a well-informed decision.

From Research to Better Care

The innovation has not gone unnoticed. For his work, Lennart received a Dekker grant from the Hartstichting. This funding will enable him to further develop the digital twin and bring it closer to clinical practice.

The aim: quicker clarity for patients with a coronary artery tear, fewer unnecessary procedures, and more personalised care. In this video, you will see how technology and medicine come together to improve lives.
