New year’s resolutions? Put ‘healthier breathing’ on your list!

Breathing. You’ve been doing it since birth, so what could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, according to research by respiratory physiologist Frans de Jongh from the University of Twente. In fact, millions of people breathe incorrectly, often without realising it.

The first week of the new year is all about fresh starts and good intentions. More exercise, healthier eating… but have you ever considered better breathing? It seems effortless, yet stress, a hectic schedule, or even poor posture can throw your body out of balance. And you’ll feel it: from light-headedness to tingling in your fingers, sometimes even a tight band around your chest. Sound familiar?

In this video, Frans explains why breathing is such a remarkable phenomenon. You can’t simply stop your heartbeat, but you can control your breath. That makes the system complex and vulnerable. He shows how hyperventilation develops, why your brain monitors CO₂ more than oxygen, and how a few mindful breaths each day can reduce stress. The best part? You don’t need expensive breathing courses or exotic techniques. A few minutes of calm and a steady rhythm are often enough to restore balance. Frans shares practical tips and shows you how to check whether you’re breathing incorrectly.

So, do you want to start 2026 with more energy, less stress and a healthier body? Begin with your breathing. Click the video and discover why something so simple matters so much.
