Why will all computers crash in 2038?

It’s almost 2026. As we prepare to ring in the new year, think back to the turn of the millennium in 2000. Remember? The world was gripped by the ‘millennium bug’. Computers were expected to go haywire, stock markets to crash, planes to fall from the sky. In the end, it wasn’t so bad. What people often forget is that this was thanks to billions spent on preparation.

What many don’t realise is that a similar problem is looming in 2038. Roland van Rijswijk-Deij, Professor at the University of Twente, explains in this video why 19 January 2038 is a critical date for our digital world. It all comes down to how computers keep track of time. This is a decision made decades ago when storage space was scarce. It seemed clever then, but now the clock is literally ticking towards the end.

Why can’t many computers count beyond 2038? What happens when they suddenly think it’s 1901? And why does this affect not only your laptop, but also aircraft, satellites, and even storm surge barriers? We have twelve years left to fix this problem. But will we manage in time? Check the video to discover why this isn’t science fiction, but a real risk. Do you know what needs to be done to prevent a digital disaster?
