AI is playing an increasingly important role in our world, but in practice it often remains a black box. You put something in and something comes out, without knowing how the algorithm works, with all the risks that entails. Dr Meike Nauta, who obtained her PhD cum laude at the University of Twente on Explainable AI, believes it is important that the user always remains in control. As an AI consultant at Datacation and assistant professor at Eindhoven University of Technology, she is committed to AI that is understandable, so that users understand how the computer reasons. AI with forethought, in other words! Nauta is Engineer of the Year 2025 and winner of the Overijssel PhD Award.
