From the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge to high-speed rail, megaprojects capture the imagination but they also bring immense risks, delays, and costs. Why do so many of these projects struggle, and what can we learn from them? Dr. Mazen Wahbeh, structural and civil engineer, has more than 35 years’ experience in mega-project construction. Drawing on his experience with the Bay Bridge Wahbeh reflects on how the lessons learned can be applied to deliver infrastructure more effectively, sustainably, and with greater public benefit. Wahbeh currently is a Research Professor at the University of Southern California.
