Imagine heart cells on a tiny chip in the lab. You can grow them, see how they behave and experiment with medicine outside the human body. You don’t need laboratory animals anymore. Still, a heart is a relatively simple organ – it only pumps blood – if you compare it with other organs like a liver or the brain. Dr. ir. Anne Leferink focuses on the development of 'tumor-on-a-chip' models to unravel molecular pathways involved in cancer metastasis and she also models the Blood-Brain-Barrier. She joined the recently founded Organ-on-Chip Center Twente. In addition, the Technical Medicine teacher Leferink has won the UT Education Award 2020-2021.
