The Human Brain Project

The human brain is the most complex ‘machine’ in the universe. It contains almost a hundred billion neurons connected by a hundred thousand billion synapses. The Human Brain Project aims to simulate a complete human brain in supercomputers that are a thousand times more powerful than the computers we have today. If this silicon brain functions properly it might reveal how brain diseases like Alzheimer or Parkinson can be treated. The project also triggers existential questions: can the digital brain eventually develop consciousness?

Prof. dr. Paul Tiesinga is full professor Neuro Informatics at the Donders Institute in Nijmegen. His group participates in The Human Brain Project.
