Information Design

Support on the visual presentation of information, or Information Design, is facilitated by the University Library with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of research output and educational materials. The demand for support on this skill among staff of all faculties underlines its relevance and forms the foundation for providing this service. Courses and other forms of support address the challenges involved in creating posters, presentations, proposals, and papers, that require complex information to be communicated accurately and efficiently.

Beginner Courses

A beginner course on Information Design is offered via the course finder at the Centre for Education and Support. The course covers the fundamentals of for example layout, typography and colour theory, and introduces principles that explain how people perceive information. Visit Information Design – Beginner Course to enrol as PhD, EngD or research staff, or sign up for the course alert if registration is not possible at the moment. Please be aware that support staff can only join on request.

Monthly Meetups

Monthly guided sessions allow attendees to improve the quality of their own projects. During the 1.5 hour meetups attendees can decide themselves how they want to use their time. Some attendees prefer to bring a project that they are working on, some start working on a new idea. Depending on the number of attendees and their specific interests, there is room for plenary discussions on certain types of research output or aspects of Information Design. Visit Monthly Meetups to learn more and to register for a session.

Tailored Services

Tailored advice and support on Information Design is provided, but the extent to which this can be given depends on the capacity at the time of the request. The options below are available for researchers (including PhDs and EngD) and support staff. Use the contact button at the bottom of the page to reach out for support.

  • A review meeting to discuss the effectiveness of an important report or presentation in terms of visual communication with a course teacher. With regard to the above mentioned (limited) capacity for tailored support we strongly recommend visiting a Monthly Meetup to discuss the project and decide if further support is possible.
  • A lecture / workshop to introduce the basics of Information Design or cover the application of Information Design to for example graphical abstracts. Lectures or workshop are provided for the audience defined above, but external participants are welcome to attend or participate if the activity is part of an event (such as a conference) organized at the University of Twente.
